The Pursuit of Mary Bennet

Synopsis

The Pursuit of Mary Bennet is a continuation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice from the perspective of the long-neglected Mary Bennet.

Growing up with four extraordinary sisters wasn’t easy for someone like Mary Bennet. But with nearly all of her sisters married and gone from the household, Mary has transformed into an attractive and eligible young woman in her own right. When yet another scandal involving Lydia and Wickham threatens the family, Mary and Kitty go to visit Jane and Charles Bingley, where they meet the dashing Henry Walsh. Eager and naïve, Mary is confused by Henry’s attentions, even as she finds herself drawing closer to him. Could this really be love? Or are they just the imaginings of a girl unschooled in the art of flirtation?

My Reaction

I found The Pursuit of Mary Bennet mostly believable because I’ve always wanted Mary to have a bit of backbone in her. She may come off as a bit rude and overwhelmingly as if she hates her sisters, but after being neglected by her entire family for so long, I can only imagine what I would have done in a similar situation.

I really enjoyed that it seemed as though she disliked Mr. Collins and no mention was made of a lingering disappointment that they had not wed. The new characters introduced to the story were believable enough, and I like that they looped more troubles back in for Lydia and Wickham (I mean, they definitely deserve their share of hardships).

If you’re a fan of Pride and Prejudice re-imaginings, then I definitely recommend The Pursuit of Mary Bennet. Otherwise, you might not understand what is happening with some of the characters. If you’re looking for another Historical Fiction to read next, check out our other reviews.
