Roomies

Synopsis

In Roomies, lacking the nerve to actually talk to the handsome musician she has been visiting for months, fate steps in one night for Holland Bakker in the form of a drunken attacker. Calvin, the subway musician, rescues her but quickly disappears when the police start asking questions.

Soon, Holland gets Calvin an audition with her uncle, Broadway’s hottest musical director. Calvin becomes the hottest act on Broadway, but he is reluctant to stand in the spotlight for the same reason he disappeared from the subway: he’s in the country illegally, his student visa having expired years ago.

Holland impulsively marries Calvin, an Irishman, and keeps her infatuation a secret only to him. Will Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?

My Reaction

Typical of most contemporary romance novels, Roomies was a really quick read. I enjoyed the “backstage” look into the theater that this story provided. Some of the characters were trite and a little stereotypical, though. Like Brian. I mean, come on, of course, the protagonist needs a boss that she hates, right? But he’s written in such a way that makes me almost feel bad for him. He was forced to give Holland a job because of her uncle, and I assume he has a stressful job as it is. I don’t know. Maybe I was just looking for something to not like about this book. I just did not enjoy the way some characters were portrayed.

There was nothing really controversial in this book. But I felt like there was too much thrown into the last couple of chapters. We meet family members that have never been seen before. A lot of time passes in the span of pages. And I feel like the reconciliation of the characters at the end happened way too quickly.

I would recommend this to a friend since it’s a quick read and you won’t have to commit too much time to something that you may end up not liking. I doubt I will seek out other books from this author duo, though.
