The Perfect Mother

Synopsis

The Perfect Mother starts with four women going out for drinks at a hip neighborhood bar; they’re looking for a fun break from their daily routine. But on this hot Fourth of July night, something goes terrifyingly wrong. One of the babies is taken from his crib. Winnie, a single mom, was reluctant to leave six-week-old Midas with a babysitter, but her fellow May Mothers insisted everything would be fine. Now he is missing. What follows is a heart-pounding race to find Midas, during which secrets are exposed, marriages are tested, and friendships are destroyed.

My Reaction

The Perfect Mother kept me glued to the couch until I was finally able to finish this scintillating story. Along the lines of The Woman in the Window and Cross Her Heart, it kept me guessing until the end. By introducing multiple characters into the story at once, the reader feels as though they are getting the whole picture, but we’re not.

There are so many side-stories throughout the book that readers are given a small glimpse into. But once we feel like we know who kidnapped Midas, we’re pulled in a completely different direction. I felt like some of the side stories were a little unnecessary, especially the inexplicable hand-job scene. I can excuse most of these faults, though, in the name of moving the story forward. All of these women have secrets that they don’t want to come out, but who is the one with the biggest secret of all?

I would definitely recommend The Perfect Mother. If you’re a fan of the modern thrillers/suspense genre in general, but especially if you like stories that will keep you on the edge of your seat/couch for days on end until you have time to finally finish reading it.
