Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart

Synopsis

Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her family into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy. A dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family, and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

My Reaction

What can I say about Girl Waits with Gun that hasn’t already been said? I found the protagonist fascinating, especially when we learn about her *past* and are able to understand her motivations a little better. Constance has no interest in men or getting married, and she and her sisters don’t have conventional jobs. Their life surrounds their farm. So when someone comes to threaten their livelihood, they will stop at nothing to protect it and their tight-knit family.

Set in 1920s New Jersey, their story takes place in a setting I’m familiar with. Much like with As Bright as Heaven, it is fun to read about places I’ve visited before, although in a different time period. The three Kopp sisters are so unlike any other characters I’ve read before. I can’t wait to read more of Stewart’s books about them.

I would definitely recommend this book as your next read. If you’re a fan of Historical Fiction or Mystery books, you will definitely find something to love about this book. Check out our other book reviews to help you find your next read.
